In a startling admission on a panel discussion Joe Hockey conceded it was a "fair criticism" to say that the Howard government should have saved more revenue during the boom years. He further commented in hindsight, his government would have been better advised to cut back
on these tax transfers and put more money aside in funds for upgrading
health, education and other infrastructure.
Of course this is no news flash except perhaps in the Opposition ranks, but the immediate reaction was despair from commentators and party hacks who do not understand that refreshing honesty is a valuable commodity in Voter eyes.
Despite the success of Kevin 07 who refused to automatically take the opposing view when Howard tried to force him on to shaky ground, the current Opposition has still failed to grasp the lesson.
I guess they will have to continue believing it's some sort of mythical honeymoon period for Rudd although I would think that line would be wearing thin by now.

Honesty's probably why Hockey won't be put up as a potential leader when they roll Turnbull.
Dumping the Nats would probably be a good start then take control. If the older Libs don't like it they can join Barnaby and still live in the past. Come their next successful Election (whenever that might be) they can duke it out with the Nats and bribe away their convictions for a few Ministerial seats just like they did under Howard.
