[this is good]
I believe that you have answered your question already: "It led to a lot of court time and usually the case would be thrown out when the judge heard the evidence." That said, if humans were a tad bit more reasonable then social issues like this one and others would be settled at the lowest levels.
Let's back up a little and look at where the pointing fingers were attached. Miranda Devine and one of the many of Sydney's rabid radio rousers. From what I heard, I'd say Ray Hadley. Artistic philistine personified.

This is another example of why conservatism never works in the majority good. It's too easily shocked, too narrow-minded, too politically bereft and far too intellectually challenged to consider those who don't see the world as they do.
I was going to post something on this but really don't know what I think about it all. Take NDC's point about who it is making all the noise. Normally totally disagree with just about ANYTHING said by Miranda Devine. However, I actually found a lot to agree with in her article on this. SHould say I am also a mother so maybe can't view this issue totally objectively. Apart from that I have also worked in an area of law enforcement dealing with child porn and some of the stuff not really so different to what I have seen of the photos from this exhibition (even had one guy once who was in trouble for collecting the 'hard stuff' make a big thing out of collecting WorldVision material depicting starving naked children etc!!!). After this work experience, even those photos by that greeting card woman who puts babies in pumpkins etc give me the heeby jeebies.
What surprised me most, xmangerm, was I'm sure we went down this path before and I thought the argument was done and dusted. I forgot things go in cycles I guess.
Ah, NDC. Good ol' Miranda. The shock jock of the newspaper.

Still getting over the Howard defeat.
Hi Emu wac,

I'm a father with 2 daughters so objectivity is a problem for me on this too. Tough gig having to work on child porn in a law enforcement role but probably not as hard as just dealing with the victims and not have the power to do something.

It seems like we now have to decide if a photo was intended to be viewed sexually, or even worse, might be viewed sexually by some deviant. (Hence the piano leg reference). This comes down to some sort of thought police.

For me the real problem comes from more overt things like child beauty pageants. The movie "Little Miss Sunshine" made the point brilliantly.

Fortunately I was only on the periphery of that work and wasn't there very long. Doesn't take long rmuch to have a profound and lasting effect on you though.

The other thing that bothers me about those pictures is the worry of whether those kids will regret their decision to pose for the pictures. Are they really old enough to be able to make an informed choice? Australian censorship law would suggest not.

I loved Little Miss Sunshine too! Watched it on video last weekend.

That's a good point you make on their decision to get published. I'll have to think on that.

Just about anything with Toni Collette is worth a view. A great movie. By the end of it I felt sympathy for all the characters. Even the father.
Highly recommend Black Balloon if you are a Toni Collette fan. I have a review and link to the trailer on my blog. It is a really great film. You might still be able to catch it at some city cinemas.
I think it's still playing here in the deck chair cinema.

I'll check out your review and see if I can catch it.

Ta.
